Trump's Lawyer Says Comey Broke the Law by Leaking. He Didn't.

In testimony that spanned almost three hours on Thursday, former FBI director James Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he believed that President Donald Trump wanted him to make the investigations into his campaign's connections to Russian Federation disappear, and that he couldn't trust Trump to tell the truth about their private conversations.

Comey said that Lynch asked him to refer to the probe as a "matter" not an investigation.

There is no reason why we shouldn't all be able to read the memos that Comey prepared following his meetings and phone calls with President Trump.

"What the president whispered in my ear was, I really look forward to working with you.I'm sitting there thinking, three times we've already talked about me staying".

Indeed, if my boss tells me she hopes I do something you best believe I'm doing my best to get it done. It says, quote, "I hope" - this is the president speaking - "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go". "I took it as a direction", Comey testified, adding, "I didn't obey".

Never in form or substance did Trump ask for Comey's loyalty, nor did the president try to impede any federal investigation, lawyer Marc Kasowitz told reporters at the National Press Club.

But Comey spoke of the underlying issue of Russian interference in a way that might appeal to a divided country - reminding Americans of the seriousness of the issue, that Russia is trying to undermine American democracy itself.

Donald Trump Jr has tweeted repeatedly during the closely watched testimony Thursday.

Warner says that in violation of clear guidelines put in place after Watergate to prevent any whiff of political interference by the White House in FBI investigations, President Donald Trump also called Comey twice to ask him to lift the cloud of the Russian Federation investigation over his White House.

The president was likely alluding to Comey's name getting dragged through the mud, over decisions he made pertaining to Hillary Clinton's email investigation.

KING: With regard to the - several of these conversations, in his interview with Lester holt on NBC, the president said, I had dinner with him.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) asked Comey why he started writing memos about his meetings with Donald Trump.

Comey had left a careful paper trail, taking notes immediately following his meetings with Trump - and conveying to his friends his concerns.

He said that he doesn't believe Comey alluded to Trump obstructing justice: "I didn't hear it", he said.

"Trump is in a unique position to tell Comey what to do, so he is not in the same position as a private citizen", McBride said.

The Times said in a statement: "We are looking into James Comey's statements, and we will report back with more information as soon as we can".

"Not in his words, no, " Comey said.

Cornell Law Professor Jens David Ohlin said that he understood "why the Republicans would want to focus on "hope" versus 'direct, ' but I don't think it makes any difference". Those facts were known two weeks prior to Sessions recusing himself from the investigations, and trump even Sessions' troubling role in Comey's firing.

Mark Warner, the committee's top Democrat, also said he believes Comey.

"It's a piece of history and I wanted to be here for it", said one congressional staffer, who had been waiting since before dawn to witness a political theater unseen in decades on Capitol Hill.
