European politicians hope for softer Brexit following the UK's General Election result

European politicians hope for softer Brexit following the UK's General Election result

Ms May said she called the crucial general election in order to strengthen her hand in the Brexit negotiations but her party lost seats and failed to reach a majority. May had been expected to win comfortably.

Mrs May is seeking to rely on the Democratic Unionist Party's 10 MPs to win key votes in Parliament - including that of the Queen's Speech scheduled for June 19.

Conservative MP Nigel Evans told CNN his party shot itself "in the head" with an "irrelevant" manifesto, which was peppered with "arsenic".

The surprising outcome, which sent the pound tumbling, forced May to form a minority government, leaving her reliant on a small group of Northern Irish parliamentarians, just nine days before Britain is due to begin negotiating a deal to leave the EU.

May said that "of course I'll reflect on what happened".

As the result became clear on Friday, EU leaders were quick to express the urgency of the upcoming Brexit negotiations.

The strength of any deal looks set to be tested when the House of Commons meets, with Jeremy Corbyn vowing to try to bring down the government by defeating Ms May in parliament and insisting: "I can still be prime minister". May had been misled by polls indicating that the Conservative Party would be able to decimate the Labour Party, which appeared to be in disarray under the leadership of socialist Jeremy Corbyn.

Conservative supporters also said Brexit had been the most important factor in their decision, as did Liberal Democrat voters.

After the election, the right-wing UK Independence Party, which helped drive Brexit, was left with no seats in Parliament.

To stay in power, the Conservatives are seeking support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

Despite not taking a majority in the United Kingdom's general election on Thursday, the Labour Party's strong showing has caused an old question to gain new life: could Vermont Sen.

"We are moving forward at a snail's pace and this is embarrassingly slow", Sam Smethers, chief executive of women's rights organisation the Fawcett Society, said in a statement.

Britain's Primer Minister Theresa May leaves Downing Street with her husband on the way to Buckingham Palace after Britain's election in London, Britain June 9, 2017.

For Sorfina Shamsudin, 22, and her friends, this GE was the first time that they were making their voices heard. And if the parties can't sync up to form a majority government, there might even be a whole new election.

"But you've got to convince them of your credibility and that you can move from protesting about the government to being in government".

May, who went into the election with a reputation for quiet competence, was criticized for a lackluster campaigning style and for a plan to force elderly people to pay more for their care, a proposal her opponents dubbed the "dementia tax".
