Democrats' real problem is that Nancy Pelosi is their true face

The president called Democrats "obstructionists", saying he thought they would do better at the polls if they worked with the GOP. Money flooded in from around the country, and platoons of young activists worked the phones and knocked on doors. All four elections have been held in red districts where Democrats shouldn't even be competitive.

Ryan told NPR on Wednesday that the ads that Republican groups ran harnessing Pelosi's unpopularity with their GOP base voters were clearly effective. He opted for civility, to the chagrin of some Democratic activists.

She also noted throughout the campaign that she's lived in the district for 25 years, unlike Ossoff, who grew up in the district but lives in Atlanta, a few miles south of the 6th District's southern border.

Handel devoted much of her speech to thanking national and state Republicans for backing her campaign before making a direct appeal to Ossoff's supporters.

Put on defense, House Democratic leaders from Pelosi on down tried to spin the outcome in Georgia as positive, arguing that coming in a close second in the solidly Republican district augured well for their chances of taking back the House next year.

"Obviously people are very concerned about where we are and they want to have a conversation about where we need to be", Rep. Tim Ryan of OH told reporters about why the group got together.

The Georgia race was seen by many as an early referendum on Trump. Progressives, still smarting over Donald Trump's victory over Hillary Clinton, "nationalized" the suburban Atlanta race. "They were being judged partly on their own". "I'm proud of the fact that my campaign has raised that money in small-dollar contributions, on average less than $50".

Many experienced operatives say the party's focus needs to be on finding and recruiting candidates with particular currency in their specific districts. "They may have wanted to send a message". That they could win with President Trump.

Yet if Trump was unpopular in the district, his approval rating, Fallon said, was "6 or 7 points higher" there than his standing nationwide. Mr. Price is now secretary of Health and Human Services.

Now, in the wake of the loss in Georgia and three other House special elections where Democrats failed to pull off upset wins, those divisions are rising back up to the surface. The South Carolina race, also June 20, ended up even closer than the Georgia race, with the Republican winning by just 3 points.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters told reporters aboard Air Force One that Karen Handel's win serves as proof that "the American people are resonating with the president's agenda" and want to see his agenda enacted.

After a contentious presidential race, the narrow losses, but alleged moral victories in Montana and Kansas, this was the Democrats time to shine.

Republicans' ability to effectively use Pelosi as their bogeyman in Georgia was especially stark when contrasted with the Democrats' tactics there.

While Republicans have mocked Pelosi's leadership in the past - the Republican National Committee sarcastically endorsed Pelosi for minority leader a year ago - the party's successful strategy of linking Democratic congressional hopefuls to the unpopular minority leader has caused some Democrats to call for new leadership.

A day after the election, Democrats are left with the bitter hope of another tighter-than-usual margin, still searching for a contest where anti-Trump energy and flush campaign coffers actually add up to victory.

Republican candidate Ron Estes defeated his Democratic opponent, James Thompson, and Libertarian opponent Chris Rockhold in the state's fourth Congressional district special election held on April 11.

For Democrats, it's a reminder of the difficulties they'll face as they try to gain House and Senate majorities in Washington.

"History is on our side", she said, explaining it's normal for presidents to lose House seats in their first midterm election.

Pelosi's most logical challenger would be Rep. Joseph Crowley, D-N.Y., 55, the House Democratic Caucus chairman.
