Defiant Nancy Pelosi says she's not going anywhere

He added: "Republicans blew through millions to keep a ruby-red seat and in their desperate rush to stop the hemorrhaging, they've returned to demonizing the party's strongest fundraiser and consensus builder". Pelosi told fellow House Democrats in a letter Wednesday, "The House was in play before the Georgia race".

She will be the first woman sent to the U.S. House from Georgia. Despite their four defeats in the Kansas, Montana, South Carolina and Georgia specials, Democrats said they see a silver lining.

"The Georgia results ought to be a warning shot for Democrats, not a battle cry".

"This should be a wake-up call for the Democratic Party, who has been doing nothing but losing since 2010 in these legislative races", Scarborough said.

Hoyer said about the 2018 midterms, "I think we can win back the House, I really believe that". And I'm mad at Trump, but I'm madder at the Democrats for letting him get in.

Around the same time House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was declaring she had broad support to remain the top Democratic leader and jabbing back at her critics, a group of her colleagues met privately to brainstorm on whether there was a way to force her out.

Ossoff's campaign alone spent more money on the race than any other Congressional election ever.

In another tweet, Trump also congratulated Republican Ralph Norman, who won a special congressional election in SC.

"The Democratic Party needs new leadership now", Cunningham tweeted.

"There are local reasons [why Ossoff lost]. Time to move forward and win again".

The win in Georgia also could strengthen the political will of Republicans in Congress evaluating their next steps on what polls show is a deeply unpopular replacement of President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law and on a tax package. And Democrats are looking nearly incapable of translating the energy of their core supporters into actual election wins.

President Donald Trump riffed on Democrats at his campaign-style rally in Iowa on Wednesday, saying the party has been "unbelievably nasty" while at the same time admitting he hasn't made bipartisanship easy.

And running simply on an anti-Trump message - like Clinton tried and failed past year - wouldn't work for Democrats in 2018 either, no matter how mired in scandal and controversy over Russian Federation the White House may be.

GOP consultant Bruce Haynes, founding partner of Washington-based Purple Strategies, said the Democrats' loss in Georgia is "troubling" for their hopes of winning an anti-Trump congressional majority next year, describing the Handel district as highly educated, fiscally conservative, socially moderate, and suburban.

Republicans can also now breathe a sigh of relief with the knowledge that they can still win in the kind of affluent, educated districts that often favor Democrats - even with a president who has divided voters in their own party. Handel might not have had the long list of Hollywood shout-outs and funding when it came to her campaign like Ossoff did, but she had House Speaker Paul Ryan, Vice President Mike Pence, and President Trump in her corner.
