Obama: 'Fundamental Meanness At The Core' Of GOP Health Care Bills

Mr Obama said that though repealing and replacing Obamacare has become a core issue for Republicans, "we fought for it because we knew it would save lives, prevent financial misery, and ultimately set this country we love on a better, healthier course".

House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that he hopes to bring the bill - which was unveiled Thursday - to the floor for a vote as early as next week.

The GOP-controlled Senate bill introduced Thursday would phase out federal money to states which opted to expand the low-income health insurance program.

"I will study the bill to determine whether it fulfills President Trump's campaign promises to lower premiums, maintain coverage and protect those with preexisting conditions without mandates", he said. President Trump predicted the final product is "going to be great" - but only after some more negotiations take place.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office will evaluate the proposal over coming days to determine the cost of the bill. The bill would slash Medicaid and rescind the Obamacare requirement that most Americans have health insurance.

Assuming every Democrat is a no vote, the GOP can't afford more than 2 of their own senators to vote against the bill.

The draft bill comes nearly two months after the House passed its own measure. Republicans view Obama's Affordable Care Act as a costly government intrusion into the private marketplace.

Remember what Trump promised the American people.

An outside political group aligned with the White House, America First Policies, said it is planning an advertising campaign targeting Mr Heller for his opposition to the bill.

McConnell wants the bill passed next week, still with no public hearings or opportunities for health care experts or advocates to have a say.

Murkowski has been critical of the Senate's handling of the bill and has urged a deliberate approach to making changes that has bipartisan buy-in. "Because Obamacare is a direct attack on the middle class, and American families deserve better than its failing status quo".

I applaud Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, of NY, in opposing the Senate health care bill just produced by a closed-door panel of Republican senators.
