Some House Democrats mull over how to oust Pelosi as leader

"I'm worth the trouble, quite frankly", she said.

"I think there was consensus within the room that there are other members within the caucus who feel just like we do", Texas Rep. Filemon Vela told CNN.

"This is certainly something that we have to discuss because it's clear that, I think, across the board in the Democratic Party we need new leadership. My leadership is recognized by many around the country".

Asked about the Democrats' doldrums and Pelosi's future role, Trump quipped that it would be "very sad for Republicans" if the congresswoman - a favorite target of Republicans - stepped down.

The renegade Democrats resurfaced again this week, after Tuesday's loss by Ossoff in a Georgia special election that received intense national coverage. In Kansas's 4th District, the GOP vote fell by more than 60 percent from the 2014 midterm; the Democrats' vote fell by 20 percent. If the Democrats had raised the profile of the race, the GOP Congressional campaign committee would have responded with lots of money and surrogate campaigners.

Democrats supportive of Pelosi have long argued that even if she stepped aside, Republicans would demonize any new leader the party elevated. They must pick up 24 seats to do so.

Still when Democrats lose four special House elections in a row there is cause for concern.

I respect any opinion that my members have.

Trump himself weighed in over Twitter Thursday morning with digs at Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

Yet, the Democrats want to place the blame for their string of defeats on the Russians, the uneducated American public, former President Bush, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and finally now, Nancy Pelosi. "That would be very bad for the Republican Party - and please let Cryin' Chuck stay!" he tweeted.

Ryan said that the reality of the situation is unfair, and that it's not Pelosi's fault. "They always want to choose our leaders and usually they go after the most effective leaders because they want to diminish the opportunity that we have", Pelosi said.

It didn't work. Democrat strategists are wondering if they might have had better success with a sharper attack on Trump and a more liberal candidate, creating sharper lines.

Rosen is a likely candidate for Senate against the most endangered GOP Senate incumbent, Dean Heller of Nevada.

By now Pelosi should have been pulled down from her perch as the Democrat's minority speaker of the House and replaced with someone who understands the political implications of Trump's win and how to deal with it. Had he focused more on electing Republican senators that year than padding his presidential majority, Democrats would have lost control of the Senate, and had he channeled more campaign funds to House candidates, Republicans might even have captured the House as well. Her father and brother made their marks as mayors of Baltimore, and her well-liked brother-in-law, Ron Pelosi, whose nephew Gavin Newsom serves as lieutenant governor of California, won a seat on the San Francisco board of supervisors in the sixties and seventies. Handel defeated Jon Ossoff, a 28 year old who, campaigning with the slogan, "Vote your Oss-off", galvanized Democrats around the country who were hoping to make discontent with President Trump translate into the first Congressional flip since the November election.

This is not the first time Pelosi's leadership has been called into question; however, the backdrop of the Trump administration is underscoring the claims of her fellow party members.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of Calif. speaks to reporters during a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, June 22, 2017. "We don't agonize. We organize".

Democrats energized by opposition to President Donald Trump keep saying they like their chances for taking control of Congress in 2018 - and, of course, no one ever won by saying otherwise.
