Dems call Trump action on Florida drilling politically motivated

Democrats said Trump and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke were being hypocritical by agreeing to a request by Florida's Republican governor to withdraw from the drilling plan, but not making the same accommodation to states with Democratic governors.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke this week removed Florida's coastal waters from a draft plan for oil and gas drilling.

Zinke highlighted Scott's role in the deal.

California's coastal recreation and tourism industry by some measures exceeds that of Florida - generating $16.55 billion in GDP in 2011, to Florida's $9.5 billion - yet Zinke has yet to announce a similar meeting with Gov. We chose to measure whether Scott had shifted his position on our Flip-O-Meter. The critics include the governors of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

Many political pundits and some congressional politicians are calling Scott on his environmental shift, claiming he's only attempting to appear "green" for an anticipated run against Sen.

Scott's spokespersons argued that Scott made no flip. "I would also say this, it smacks of what we never want to see in politics which is: Is it self-serving?"

Leaders of states up and down both coasts, including Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, Virginia and NY all agreed they were against the idea last week. "Rick supports expansion of nuclear power, use of alternative fuels and off-shore drilling". In fact, even the bayous of Texas and Louisiana have their charms, and their tourism industries (which have been damaged by leaks, including the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon blowout).

Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday continued her fight to keep OR offshore areas free of oil drilling. A source with knowledge of the matter said Cooper was also trying to arrange a meeting with Zinke. "It doesn't make any sense".

"President Trump's offshore drilling plan is unprecedented and will face major opposition from Mainers at its first public hearing on January 22", First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a Democrat, said in a statement. Scott was initially mum.

He also correctly noted "the industrial infrastructure needed to support offshore drilling, and ultimately offshore production of oil and gas, is wholly incompatible with existing tourist-centric development".

Unlike other extreme Trump administration proposals, offshore oil drilling has always been opposed by coastal state residents and their elected representatives, including many Republicans. He noted that Washington, like Florida, has a strong coastal tourism and recreation economy that could be harmed by an oil spill, and that he previously requested Washington not be included in new lease sales. Had Zinke cared about the wishes of coastal communities or how drilling off their coasts will affect them, he would have proposed a plan that shrinks drilling even further, not proposed expanding operations to almost every corner of our waters. "My top priority is to ensure that Florida's natural resources are protected, which is why I proposed $1.7 billion for the environment in this year's budget". For the first time in its history, ME split its electoral votes in 2016, with one going to Trump and the other to his Democrat opponent Hillary Clinton. Heather Swift, a spokeswoman for Zinke, confirmed Wednesday that McMaster had asked for a meeting with the secretary on the issue. But unlike Florida, none of those states voted for Trump in 2016. He, at the time, owned a $135,000 stake in an oil company drilling in Collier County - a short shot to the Everglades. Susan Glickman, Florida Director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, said the only reason to allow seismic testing is to find places to drill.
