Florida impacted by salmonella outbreak traced to eggs sold at Publix, Walmart

A Salmonella outbreak linked to a massive egg recall expanded last week when 12 more people reported contracting the foodborne illness after eating the popular breakfast food item. Due to the fact that reporting on this topic has been lax, there may be cases still unaccounted for or properly documented.

The eggs went to stores and restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. NY and Virginia have reported the highest number of cases, with eight each. In total 35 cases have been reported across nine states with 11 people hospitalized.

In grocery stores, the eggs were sold under the following brands: Country Daybreak; Crystal Farms; Coburn Farms; Sunshine Farms; Glenview; Great Value (Walmart's store brand), and Food Lion's store brand.

At least 16 people who were ill said they ate egg dishes from different restaurants. So far, no deaths have been reported.

Some 207 millions eggs were voluntarily recalled in April by Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Ind., because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella braenderup, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others who have weakened immune systems. Days later, Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. issued its own recall for 23,400 dozen eggs that it bought from the farm.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an update Thursday on the salmonella outbreak that led to the recall of about 200 million eggs produced by an IN farm. The possibly tainted eggs were distributed from the farm between January 11 and April 12. The bacteria can also cause arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis on rare occasions. Alternatively, bacteria in the hen's ovary or oviduct can get to the egg before the shell forms around it. A list of the FDA recalled products can be found here.
