International Nurses' Day: Anita from Odisha among Florence Nightingale awardees

Addressing a function at Rashtrapati Bhawan on International Nurses Day, the President called nurses- true nation-builders.

In January 1974, 12 May was chosen to celebrate the day as it is the anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Co-ordinated in the United Kingdom by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), events will be held across the country, including in Lincolnshire where the four Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) - East, South, South West, and West - are supporting plans to celebrate nurses.

Banerjee in a tweet said, "Today is International Nurses Day".

CCGs will also be showing their support via their Facebook and Twitter feeds.

The President congratulated the award winners and said that the awardees display India's unity in diversity. In the past few years, the number of registered nurses and other health workers has crossed 27 lakh (till March 2017).

Donna Green, chief nurse at Hampshire Hospitals, said "It's great to take time out to say thank you and celebrate the wonderful contribution of nurses".

Lauding the Health Ministry for its efforts and initiatives in improving and enhancing nursing education in the country.

The President said that International Nurses Day is an occasion for the entire nursing community to remember Florence Nightingale and renew their commitment to her ideals.

The Union Health Minister said the Government strongly believes that health is a human right. "This belief was the cornerstone for genesis and introduction of world's largest healthcare scheme- the "Ayushman Bharat", by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, earlier this year", Nadda said.

Nakhro said that though the nurses may not be regarded as Florence Nightingale herself, he said society acknowledges their phenomenal services and hard work and he appealed to them to remain strong and continue their good and noble services.

The awards are given to outstanding nursing personnel employed with the Centre, States or Union Territories. The award carries a medal, a certificate, a citation certificate and Rs. 50,000/-in cash to each of the awardees.
