Apple faces class action over MacBook keyboard

Apple faces class action over MacBook keyboard

Users say Flatter keyboards are breaking down because specks of dust can get trapped underneath the keys making them un-pressable.

Apple is facing a class-action lawsuit over the much-complained-about "butterfly" key-switch keyboard that features on recent versions of the MacBook Pro. It applies to MacBooks equipped with a butterfly keyboard manufactured in 2015 or later and MacBook Pro models from 2016 and later.

The Outline was the first outlet to substantially cover the magnitude of the issue, writing that Apple Geniuses responsible for diagnosing and repairing these Apple computers would benevolently attribute dead keys and double-spacing spacebars to a "piece of dust" stuck under the keyboard. If that fails to solve the problem of non-responsive keys or repeated keystrokes, the only remaining option is fix. The suit also claims Apple knew about the keyboard's defects before the product launched in 2015. When one or more of the keys on the keyboard fails, the MacBook can no longer serve its core function: typing. They are also asking for Apple to reimburse the fix amount and replace the laptops. Another plaintiff by the name of Kyle Barbaro had his keyboard repaired, only have have it fail a second time a few weeks later. Whether the keyboards are eventually fixed in a newer model remains to be seen, but for now, exercise some caution when buying a new Apple laptop, particularly if you type a lot.

The court filing points to the petition and to a litany of gripes about the keyboard harvested from online discussion forums as evidence of the keyboard's failings. The company even stated that it is 'four times more stable'. "The keyboard defect in the MacBook is considerably certain to demonstrate". Whatever was tweaked by Apple did not seem to solve any of the issues as a Change.org petition calling for the recall of these defective Macbooks reached 17,000 signatures in just one week.

Among other things, the suit accuses Apple of fraudulent concealment, and for violating California's Unfair Competition Law and Consumer Legal Remedies Act, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. "The latter demand includes reimbursement for the purchase of replacement laptops", AppleInsider reported.

Apple hasn't said anything publicly about the issue yet, although it has internally suggested methods like using a can of compressed air to clean the keyboard.
