Artificial Trans Fats Could Essentially Be Extinct By 2023

Artificial Trans Fats Could Essentially Be Extinct By 2023

The public health arm of the United Nations said it will urge governments to ban or restrict those fats and replace them with healthier fats and oils. This is because they're used in partially-hydrogenated oils, which were first used as a butter replacement and then later as a replacement for foods containing saturated fatty acids. After some deliberation, the FDA determined that food manufacturers in the USA should find alternatives to trans fats in their products. Unlike "good" unsaturated fats, trans fats have been shown to up your LDL (bad cholesterol) and lower your HDL (good cholesterol).

It is an artificial oil commonly called trans fat.

The six strategies World Health Organization has proposed include a review of dietary sources of industrially-produced trans fats, the promotion of alternative healthier oils and fats, legislation and regulatory actions to curb trans fats, assessment of trans fats consumption in populations, creation of awareness about the risks of transfats and enforcement of policies and regulations.

Several countries have already put in measures to cut back trans fats from their food supply.

Food makers tend to like artificial trans fats because they prolong product shelf life.

Switzerland, Britain, Canada, and the USA have all already moved to ban trans fats, and Thailand is expected to make a similar decree in the next month, according to the New York Times.

The WHO estimates that trans fat leads to the deaths of more than 500,000 people from heart disease each year. The world is now embarking on the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition, using it as a driver for improved access to healthy food and nutrition.

This southern fried chicken was made in NY in 2006 with soy bean oil, a good substitute for trans fats. Trans fats still hide in some foods that millions of people eat every day, like coffee creamer, baking products like margarine and shortening, pre-made frosting, some potato chips, pre-made dough and fried food.

Thoughts? Should Australia be doing more to regulate the use of trans fat in our foods? While WHO does not have the power to enact this global ban on trans fats, it hopes that future generations would be addicted to trans fats.

"WHO calls on governments to use the REPLACE action package to eliminate industrially-produced trans-fatty acids from the food supply,"said WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus".

E nforce compliance of new and existing policies and regulations. He is head of the public health organization Resolve to Save Lives.

In Denmark, the first country to mandate restrictions on industrially-produced trans fats, the trans fat content of food products declined dramatically and cardiovascular disease deaths declined more quickly than in comparable OECD countries.

"We call on food producers in our sector to take prompt action and we stand ready to support effective measures to work toward the elimination of industrially produced trans fats and ensure a level playing field in this area", said Rocco Rinaldi, secretary-general of the International Food and Beverage Alliance.
