What You Need to Know About the Massive Egg Recall

What You Need to Know About the Massive Egg Recall

One New Jersey resident is among 35 people in nine states infected with salmonella linked to eggs produced by a farm in Hyde County, N.C., according to an update by the Food & Drug Administration. Food Safety News reported that this has been the largest egg recall happened since the 2010 incident when the salmonella outbreak was associated with the recalling of eggs from two big farms almost about 550 million eggs.

Rose Acre Farms, in a statement later said that it is not only taking measures to correct deficiencies at the farm but is also ensuring that the farm meets the standards sets by the FDA and USDA.

The eggs were sold under the following brand names: Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms, Glenview, Great Value, as well as Food Lion stores, according to the FDA website.

The outbreak started with a few hospitalizations in April, but the CDC warns it shows no signs of letting up.

A salmonella infection typically causes severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and a fever a day or two after being exposed to the bacteria, Salmonella enteritidis.

The eggs have been sold under a variety of retailers and restaurants, including Walmart and Waffle House. Salmonella is not typically life-threatening, but it can prove fatal in children or elderly adults, and it is known to kill many people in developing countries who don't have access to medical services.

Even if you're not in a high-risk category, it's wise to stay away from these eggs. "These restaurants reported using shell eggs in the dishes eaten by ill people". Customers are encouraged to check for a plant number of P-1065 on the cartons, or a plant number of P-1359D for the Publix and Sunups eggs. When the agency's health inspectors did a site visit in March, they reportedly found over a dozen rodents crawling around, and also saw employees handle dirty equipment and touch their bodies without washing their hands afterward. So far, no deaths have been reported.
