Closing North Korea nuclear test site an important step, United Nations chief says

Closing North Korea nuclear test site an important step, United Nations chief says

North Korea said Saturday that it will dismantle its northeastern Punggye-ri test site between May 23 and 25 in the presence of local and worldwide media.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watches the test-fire of a strategic submarine underwater ballistic missile (not pictured), in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang on May 9, 2015.

The closure of the site is seen as a step toward the denuclearization of North Korea. "The U.S. doesn't want a gradual dismantling this time, like they did in withdrawing the nuclear deal in Iran". "I think the implementation of the decision means getting rid of the nuclear weapons. They have what they need so the way in which they collapse the tunnels is just show", said Melissa Hanham, senior research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

Thae - who fled with his family to South Korea in 2016 - made his explosive comments during a press conference in which he unveiled his autobiography, "The Secret Code of the 3rd Floor Room". "It will be American know-how, knowledge entrepreneurs and risk takers working alongside the North Korean people to create a robust economy". That's what the president is going to say, ' he said.

"We hope North Korea will seize the moment and take the bold steps necessary to lead North Korea to a peaceful and prosperous future".

"If we get if we get denuclearization, of course there will be sanctions relief". It was reported that the entrance to the landfill and its surrounding objects will be destroyed.

From the North's eastern city of Wonsan, they will move near the test site by train and will return home after the event via charter flight either on May 26 or May 27, according to the ministry. The North has been vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its 28,500 troops from South Korea and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

"North Korea has a very extensive program".

The United States is prepared to offer North Korea security assurances and bountiful private investment if it makes the strategic choice to give up its nuclear weapons, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo pledged Sunday. However, there are lingering doubts about whether Kim would ever agree to fully relinquish the weapons he probably views as his only guarantee of survival.

Han, who made no reference to the treaties, told the United Nations assembly that his country aimed to make more "efforts to achieve the development of intra-Korean relations, defuse acute military tensions and substantially remove the danger of the war on the Korean peninsula".

Pompeo met with Kim last week in North Korea, helping set the stage for Trump's historic meeting with Kim in Singapore on June 12.
