Google employees quit over drone "evil"

Google employees quit over drone

But according to Gizmodo, this project has been hugely controversial within Google, with some employees saying that it jeopardises trust and goes against the company's core beliefs.

However, Google's involvement in the project has triggered massive protests within the company and now almost 4,000 Google employees, out of the 85,000 Alphabet employees, have signed an internal petition asking Google Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai to end the tech giant's support for Project Maven and halt the "business of war".

Others expressed concerns at Google's political moves, like its sponsorship of the Conservative Political Action Conference and its struggle to address internal diversity concerns. Yesterday, more than 90 academics in computer science, AI and ethics signed an open letter calling on the company to end its work on Project Maven.

The Mountain View, Calif. -based firm is said to be using machine learning to help the Department of Defense classify images captured by drones.

Google has yet to respond to a request for comment about the resignations.

While the technology giant has claimed that the work was "for non-offensive purposes", previous US government memos make it clear the basis of the project is to "enhance military decision-making". "While Google regularly decides the future of technology without democratic public engagement, its entry into military technologies casts the problems of private control of information infrastructure into high relief".

The ICRAC, however, see this as just a step away from autonomous weapons.

"With Project Maven, Google becomes implicated in the questionable practice of targeted killings".

Google employees are not alone in opposing Google's involvement in the Pentagon project.

Google, however, "should not be in the business of war", according to the letter to Pichai that was signed by thousands of disgruntled employees. The New York Times reported in April that over 3,000 Google employees signed the petition.

The spokesperson added in the statement that their work was "intended to save lives" and that they were working on internal policies to govern complicated decisions involving AI technology and defense contracts. And asked Pichai to "draft, publicize, and enforce a clear policy stating that neither Google nor its contractors will ever build warfare technology". According to the Wall Street Journal, the Defense Department spent $7.4 billion on technology involving AI a year ago alone.

Still members of the tech industry are concerned.

"According to Defense One, the DoD already plans to install image analysis technologies on-board the drones themselves, including armed drones".

Medin and Alphabet director Schmidt, who both sit on the Pentagon's Defense Innovation Board, have pushed Google to work with the government on counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, telecommunications and more. The employees are resigning due to the ethical concerns they have over Google's expertise being used in military technology that could lead to the loss of human life.
