NIA court convicts 18 in Wagamon SIMI training camp case, 17 acquitted

This is reportedly the first case in the state for which the trial was held through video-conferencing, connecting the NIA court with jails in cities like New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Bengaluru.

The NIA had made Qureshi, an accused in connection with the financial assistance SIMI, had received for organising the camp.

Kochi: A National Investigation Agency (NIA) special court in Kochi sentenced 18 persons, who were convicted in the 2007 SIMI Wagamon camp case, to seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) on Tuesday.

The verdict also includes one year RI and Rs 25,000 fine under Section 10 of UAPA, 5-year RI Under Section 38 of UAPA, 7-year RI and Rs 25,000 fine for offences under the Explosive Substance Act and seven-year RI under Section 120 (B) of the IPC.

The court said that the period of judicial custody served by the accused would be deducted from the sentence. Later, many terror cases and the birth of the terror outfit Indian Mujahideen were traced to this camp.

Last day, the court had acquitted 17 accused persons in the case.

There were 38 accused in the case, but two, including Wasiq Billa are absconding.

On Monday, the court found Saduli and P.A. Shibily - both natives of Kottayam, Mohamad Ansar and Abdul Sathar - both residents of Aluva, Hafeez Husain (Belgaum; Karnataka), Safdar Hussain Nagori, Aamil Parwaz (both from Ujjain; Madhya Pradesh), Mohammed Shami Bagewadi (Bijapur; Karnataka), Nadeem Sayeed (Belgaum), Mufti Abul Basheer (Azamgarh; Uttar Pradesh), Dr H.A. Asadullah (Bellary; Karnataka), Kamaruddin Nagori (Ujjain), Shakeel Ahammed (Dharwad; Karnataka), Dr Mirza Ahmed Beg (Bidar; Karnataka), Danish, Manzar Imam (both natives of Ranchi; Jharkhand), Mohammed Abu Faisal Khan (Andheri West; Mumbai) and Alamzeb Afridi (Ahmedabad; Gujarat) guilty. The 31st accused Mehaboob Malik of Madhya Pradesh was shot dead by security officers while trying to escape from jail.

The sensational case refers to the arms camp at Thangalpara at Vagamon which was run from 10 to 12 December in 2007.

As per the NIA's finding, the SIMI leaders had conspired to conduct training camps for its active operatives and had held such camps in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and many other places.

According to the NIA chargesheet, the organisers of the camp had imparted training to the participants in advanced weapons, firing, bomb-making, rope-climbing, motorcycle maneuvering on the rocky hill of Thangalpara.

The case was registered at the Mundakayam police station in 2008 and a special investigation team (SIT) was formed.
