Steve Bruce: Characters are key on Villa's big night

Steve Bruce: Characters are key on Villa's big night

Aston Villa are now preparing for tonight's huge game at home to Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship Play-Off Semi Final second Leg. Villa won the first leg 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium thanks to Mile Jedinak's early header, giving them a massive advantage ahead of the second leg at Villa Park.

Tony Pulis lamented Middlesbrough's inability to create more chances during their 1-0 aggregate play-off defeat to Aston Villa.

At the heart of that defence was former Chelsea and England centre back John Terry who joined the club past year on a free transfer and whose appointment as captain appears to have had a significant impact.

"It was a very good performance tonight", Terry told Sky Sports. The boys are different class. It was important in the first half we didn't concede. I think our game-plan and game setup worked superbly, so the manager deserves a lot of credit for that.

Tony Pulis: "I'm not concerned about Aston Villa, I'm more concerned about us and the way we play and what we're trying to achieve".

The match began with a minute's applause for former Villa defender Jlloyd Samuel who died earlier on Tuesday at the age of 37 in a vehicle accident.

Pulis believes his side were unfortunate to lose the first leg, adding: "Generally, the team played well. It's hard for me to say that but that's being brutally honest".

Villa held on to claim a draw on the night and victory overall, sparking wild celebrations as their fans flooded onto the pitch at fulltime.

"They're a good football side".

"We've got an advantage, the crowd can hopefully play their part, but it's a big tie still ahead". "We're going to Wembley, let's enjoy it".
