Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire

Swiss Tesla accident: crash may have sparked battery fire

Tesla is producing about 2,660 Model 3's per week, according to Bloomberg's Tesla Tracker.

The NTSB now has four investigations looking at incidents involving Tesla vehicles, though not all of them involve issues with the company's autopilot systems.

Waymo, Alphabet Inc's self-driving unit, said on Sunday that Matthew Schwall had joined from Tesla, where he was its main technical contact with US safety investigators.

News of Tesla's restructuring comes after a Wall Street Journal report revealed that Doug Field, the company's senior vice president of engineering is "taking some time off".

Musk said in the memo that Tesla still plans to hire more people to help it ramp up its Model 3 production.

Currently, Tesla has around 500,000 preorders for its more affordable model 3, its first mass-market electric vehicle.

However, representatives of the company repeatedly warned the owners of electric Tesla, that when using the autopilot, they should still be careful and watch the road.

"It certainly needs to be better and we work to improve it every day, but flawless is the enemy of good", Musk tweeted.

In another Twitter message on Monday, Musk said the "probability of fatality is much lower in a Tesla", saying Tesla would begin reporting safety numbers from the second quarter of 2018.

Meanwhile, Tesla is being investigated by the transport safety authorities for a crash, during which, the driver said, the Autopilot feature was on.

Witnesses said the Tesla did not brake prior to impact.

The NTSB and Tesla have also been at odds as of late after the agency accused the automaker of releasing classified information regarding one of its investigations while it was still going on.

The Tesla Model S crashed into the truck at 60 miles per hour (97 kph) apparently without braking before impact, according to police in South Jordan, a suburb of Salt Lake City.

The NTSB said last week it was investigating a Tesla accident in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 8 that killed two teenagers and injured another - the agency's fourth active probe into crashes of the company's electric vehicles.

A survey done as recently as February found that almost 60 percent of drivers who now own a connected vehicle said they wouldn't buy a self-driving auto, even if money wasn't a factor.

The accident is another in a series of issues that have plagued the company from Palo Alto, California, including a dust-up with the National Transportation Safety Board over the handling of data related to an investigation into a March 23 fatal accident involving a Tesla Model X in Mountain View, California.
