5 tornados confirmed from Tuesday's storm

Two tornadoes touched down in CT during Tuesday's severe weather, the National Weather Service confirmed Thursday.

Nearby Brookfield was not hit by a tornado, but did see a "macroburst" with winds around 100 miles per hour.

The second report said an EF1 tornado moved along a 4.5 mile path from Southbury to Oxford.

On June 9, 2011, a brief EF-1 tornado touched down in Litchfield County with straight line winds.

The NWS said numerous trees were uprooted along both paths. The Weather Service also says a macroburst, or thunderstorm downdraft, affected Dutchess County, along the I-84 corridor between the Beacon/Wappingers Falls area and East Fishkill/Hopewell Junction vicinity.

Residents in the Northeast cleaned up Wednesday, a day after powerful storms pounded the region with torrential rain and marble-sized hail, leaving at least four people dead and more than 200,000 homes and businesses without power. The storms toppled trees, taking two lives in Newburgh and one in Rockland County.

Restaurants on Liberty Street, where roofs were blown off of buildings, donated food to an impromptu community cookout that began on Wednesday night and lasted through Thursday. Putnam County grappled with 144 closed roads. But there were no reports of damage from the event.

Officials say meteotsunamis are driven by air-pressure disturbances often associated with fast-moving weather events, such as severe thunderstorms, squalls, and other storm fronts. Most meteotsunamis are too small to notice.

It could take days to fully restore power in Newburgh after a tornado slammed the city during Tuesday's powerful and deadly weather, the mayor says.

In addition, the Weather Service says two tornadoes hit CT, where two people died. Hail was reported to be as large as tennis balls in some parts of the Hudson Valley and CT. An 11-year-old NY girl was killed when a large tree toppled onto the vehicle she was in. Several lightning strikes led to structure fires in New Jersey and MA.

Airlines also canceled and delayed flights in and out of the region.
