Gopher Teams Bring Home NCAA Academic Honors

Gopher Teams Bring Home NCAA Academic Honors

GW's women's cross country, golf, men's soccer, softball, men's tennis, men's and women's track and women's water polo teams were honored.

Nine teams from Pepperdine, seven from UCLA and five from USC were also among 1,289 NCAA Division I teams recognized for outstanding academic achievements.

The mission of the Ole Miss Student-Athlete Development program is to challenge student-athletes to be lifelong learners while pursuing continuous improvement academically, socially, personally and professionally during and beyond their careers as student-athletes.

"The academic performance by our student-athletes is a source of pride for UConn and I am honored to be associated with such an impressive group of young men and women", director of athletics David Benedict said.

The University of New Mexico had four athletic programs - men's golf, women's golf, men's tennis and beach volleyball - earn salutations from the NCAA Wednesday for having 2016-17 Academic Progress Rates in the top 10 percent of the NCAA in a sport.

The men's and women's fencing (2014), women's volleyball (2014) and wrestling (2014, 2016-18) programs have captured NCAA Championships during the past four years.

Cross country, tennis, volleyball, golf, lacrosse and gymnastics were among the Rutgers women's programs recognized, while baseball and men's cross country were cited among men's teams. The Nittany Lions have had at least three squads earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards in all 13 years of the program.

The NCAA did not recognize N.C. State for being among the top 10 percent, and its sports teams' scores have not been released. The women's golf team was honored for the eighth-consecutive year. IN fact, the team has achieved a flawless April score the past four reports, starting with the 2013-14 season. The most recent April score is based on the scores from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17 academic years or cohorts.

The APR is a measure to track a student-athlete's chances of graduating. All teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
