IPL 2018 play-off scenarios: Mumbai Indians deepen conundrum for race

IPL 2018 play-off scenarios: Mumbai Indians deepen conundrum for race

The Mumbai Indians kept their hopes of defending their Indian Premier League title alive with a tense three run win over the Kings XI Punjab at the Wankhede stadium.

Andrew Tye finished with four wickets to his account and was the most impressive bowler for Punjab.

Rahul's valiant 94 off 60 balls went in vain as Kings XI failed to chase down 186 thanks to some superb bowling by Jasprit Bumrah (3/15) and Mitchell McClenaghan (2/37).

The Kings XI rocked the hosts with some early wickets.

Mumbai Indians started very well with the bat after some brilliant shots from the bat of Suryakumar Yadav.

Stoinis, however, bounced back in his next over to pack back Krunal with a deceptive slower bouncer, ending in a simple top edge to the hands of Rajpoot at short fine before being hit for two boundaries and a six by Pollard as the West Indian completed his 22-ball fifty. An added bonus will be if Chennai Super Kings beat Kings XI Punjab, then they will go through without the Net Run-Rate issue.

However, Pollard joined forces in a 65-run fifth-wicket stand with Krunal Pandya, who made 32, to reinvigorate the innings.

The Kings XI Punjab lost the match but KL Rahul won the hearts with his incredible knock and took his team to nearly the victory but could not convert it into a win.

Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Aaron Finch and then KL Rahul and the wickets set the cat among the pigeons in the Punjab camp. But as the West Indian all-rounder was poised for a big score, Ravichandran Ashwin (2/18) removed him in the 16th over, bringing Punjab back into the game. "As good as our bowling attack is.we haven't been putting up complete performance as a team, with both bat and the ball, and that sums up why we probably haven't won games lately". He put together a 111-run partnership with Aaron Finch who scored 46 runs. Today, on day 41 we have Royal Challengers Bangalore hosting the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 51 match of IPL 11. The last five wickets fell for just 10 runs with three run-outs and Punjab were bowled out for 88.

The qualification cut-off will surely move up to 14, which means Mumbai and Kings XI will need to win their last games to stay in contention. Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma also has to be given credit for using Bumrah really well - he got one over at the start of the innings, one in the middle and two in the death.
