Mideast rivals weigh next moves after Gaza violence

Mideast rivals weigh next moves after Gaza violence

Israel says the military has delivered eight trucks full of humanitarian aid and medical supplies to the Gaza Strip, where Israeli troops firing from across the border have killed almost 60 Palestinians at mass border protests.

"The Israeli army struck targets belonging to Hamas in the northern Gaza Strip, including terrorist infrastructure and weapons-making facilities", the military said in a statement. It said explosive devices and firebombs were used, while Israeli soldiers were also shot at.

On Monday, Israeli fire killed 60 Palestinians who were protesting along the Gaza frontier as a ceremony was held in Jerusalem to mark the transfer of the United States embassy from Tel Aviv to the city.

The Arab League called Thursday for an global probe into alleged crimes by Israeli forces against Palestinians following mass protests on the Gaza border that saw dozens of demonstrators killed.

The protests were directed at a crippling blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after the Islamic militant group seized power in Gaza in 2007.

A Palestinian security source in Gaza confirmed the target was a Hamas observation point, saying the Israeli attack resulted in no injuries.

Since the protests began on March 30, Israeli forces have killed at least 109 Palestinians in the coastal enclave and wounded about 12,000 people.

Netanyahu said it was fitting, noting that Guatemala also followed the U.S.to be the second country to recognize Israel 70 years ago.

Many council members also re-emphasized their distance from the USA decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem and recognize it as Israel's capital.

"This proves what so many have tried to ignore: Hamas is behind these riots, and the branding of the riots as "peaceful protests" could not be further from the truth", said IDF spokeman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, according to the Times of Israel.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the embassy's opening on Wednesday in an office complex in west Jerusalem.

Jerusalem's status is perhaps the thorniest issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A Hamas official said that 50 of those killed were members of the group.

Palestinians have also held demonstrations on the Gaza border for their right of return to their homes, now in Israel.

The group Medical Aid for Palestinians called for the worldwide community to provide immediate support for Gaza's health system to treat the wounded. It sees the entire city as its capital.

The Trump administration's relocation of the U.S. Embassy from Tel Aviv to contested Jerusalem upended decades of U.S. policy and went against an global consensus that the holy city's status should be settled through negotiations. "We condemn the appalling, deadly violence in Gaza yesterday", [Rupert] Colville [spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights] said, adding that attempts to cross or damage a border fence "are not sufficient grounds for the use of live ammunition".

Deadly clashes have further escalated during the so-called "Great March of Return", which culminated on Monday when the USA embassy officially opened in Jerusalem.

Israel was criticised internationally for killing unarmed Palestinians.
