Nick Cave & Warren Ellis to score new 'Serial'-inspired series

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis to score new 'Serial'-inspired series

HBO and Sky announced Wednesday that a four-hour docuseries called "The Case Against Adnan Syed" is on the way.

The series, which isn't associated directly with the podcast, will further explore the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Baltimore County high school student Hae Min Lee.

Amy Berg, whose documentary Deliver Us From Evil, in 2006, investigated sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, will direct. Access to Syed, his family and friends, as well as the defense team will also shine a new light on the case by raising new questions about what really happened to Hae Min Lee.

The podcast Serial was inspired by a documentary reality series about a mysterious death, and now the crime covered in Serial is becoming a documentary reality series.

The case has been subject to renewed global attention since it was the focus of the popular Serial podcast in 2014.

Welch vacated Adnan Syed's conviction and granted him a new trial after new evidence challenged the reliability of cell phone data linking Syed to the crime scene, and a long-awaited alibi witness finally had her day in court.

Berg has been in production on the series since 2015, charting the various machinations and breakthroughs that have marked the case, including the latest twist. Prosecutors appealed to Maryland's intermediate appeals court, which in March granted a new trial.

Zai Bennett, director of programming at Sky Entertainment UK & Ireland, said: "We're excited to partner with our friends at HBO to bring this fascinating and gripping case to television screens worldwide".

Nick Cave will also be providing an original soundtrack for the series, which is yet to receive a release date. It will be exec-produced by Henrietta Conrad and Jemima Khan for Instinct Productions and Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan and Andrew Stearn for Working Title TV.
