Soldier killed in Pak firing along IB in Jammu

The violation of ceasefire by Pakistan in Arnia and RS Pura Sector comes two days after India asked the security forces not to launch operations during Ramzan while accepting the proposal of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to halt security force operations during Amarnath Yatra and Ramzan.

The slain officer was identified as a 28-year-old constable Sitaram Upadhyaya of 192 Battalion. In total, six persons, including a BSF officer, were injured in the firing.

A BSF jawan was among two persons injured when Pakistan Rangers opened fire and lobbed mortars at over 15 border outposts (BOPs) and some civilian areas along the International Border (IB) in Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu and Kashmir, an official said on Thursday. While Indian forces retaliated strongly, a BSF constable - Devender Kumar - lost his life.

In the heavy Pakistan shelling in R S Pura and Arnia sectors, five civilians were also injured and evacuated to hospitals by police in bullet-proof vehicles, a police officer said.

Late Ram hailed from Paaliganj in Jharkhand's Giridh district. He is survived by a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter.

The troubles had started along the worldwide border in Bobbiyan area of Hiranagar sector in wee hours of Tuesday when BSF foiled an infiltration attempt by militants from Pakistan side.

On Tuesday, a BSF constable was killed in Pakistan firing on the IB in the Samba district. The injured included ASI Desraj, Farooq Din of Jora Farm, Payara Lal of Shamka, and Seema Devi of Nai Basti, along with Harbans Lal and Raman Gupta, both from Trewa in Arnia sector.

The local police have also issued an advisory to the locals, requesting them not to move out till the time shelling continues from the Pakistan side. Troops have also foiled four infiltration bids along the worldwide border since May 12.

Following the ceasefire violation, the schools within a three-kilometer radius of International Border (IB) have been declared closed by the administration.
