U17 Keeper Releases Incredibly Mature Statement Following Controversial Red Card

U17 Keeper Releases Incredibly Mature Statement Following Controversial Red Card

Ireland's U17's have been knocked out of the 1/4 final of the European Championship's in controversial circumstances.

Corcoran pulled off an impressive save to keep Holland's fifth and decisive spot-kick from Daishawn Redan out and to seemingly keep his side's hopes alive.

However, the referee adjudged that Jimmy had moved off the goal line (not allowed) and ordered a re-take - AND gave Jimmy a yellow card (his second of the game).

It's disappointment for Ireland, but Corcoran can expect a warm welcome and bags of support upon his return from the tournament.

Inexplicably, Proske then shocked all watching at Proact Stadium, Chesterfield, UK, by astoundingly showing Corcoran a second yellow card, resulting in a red and his dismissal, reducing the young shot stopper to tears.

And, to add to the drama, under Uefa rules Ireland were unable to replace their goalkeeper because the match had gone to penalties, which forced defender Oisin McEntee to take Corcoran's place between the sticks.

When play resumed, captain Redan made no mistake from the retake and fired the Netherlands into the semifinals.

As the Dutch wheeled away in triumph after a 5-4 victory, Irish officials remonstrated with the referee and senior team boss Martin O'Neill marched onto the pitch to take issue with the decision.

"It was a frustrating end to the match, especially as the referee had warned the Dutch goalkeeper twice during the shoot-out", said Ireland manager Colin O'Brien.

Ireland had been under pressure during a tough first half but had battled back into the tie and the penalty save in the shoot-out would surely have given them the momentum to finish the game. Worse, it may look like Corcoran left his line in real time, but replays actually show that the referee got it wrong.
