Walmart Inc Stock Down Despite Earnings Beat, Online Sales Growth

Amundi Pioneer Asset Management Inc. lifted its stake in Walmart by 955.2% in the 4th quarter.

The world's largest retailer reported Thursday that both revenue and profits beat Wall Street estimates. USA comparable-store sales excluding fuel were up 2.1% (+2.2% with fuel), as the retailer saw slight gains in the average ticket (+1.3%) and traffic (+0.8%).

Walmart said some consumers may have felt the pinch from rising gas prices, but consumer demand remained robust. But because we're operating more efficiently, we were able to leverage expenses in our stores this quarter.

It cut its outlook for the year Thursday as it trims sending to offset declining revenue. But its comparable sales were disappointing.

Walmart said it posted a 12th straight quarter of declining comparable inventory levels while maintaining enough stock in stores to serve customers. Walmart's net sales from global business grew almost 12% to over $30 billion. It has vastly increased the number of goods its sells outside of its stores.

A big question facing Walmart - and other brick-and-mortar retailers scrambling to build out their online capabilities - is how much e-commerce sales are cannibalizing transactions that would have otherwise been made in its stores.

Walmart is reworking its website with a focus on fashion and home furnishings. It also launched new private clothing brands. "We're pleased that USA e-commerce delivered sales growth of 33% with strength at Walmart.com and online grocery". Euclidean Technology Limited Liability Company reported 16,712 shares or 1.62% of all its holdings. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) has a 20-Day average volume of 9.61 Million. Customer visits rose just 0.8%, the slowest growth in more than a year, as unseasonably cold and wet April weather kept American shoppers from visiting the stores. The retailer also is pushing its online grocery sales, which figure more prominently on the store's homepage, and 800 stores will have delivery this year. And its online business is still a distant second to Amazon.

While it fights off rivals at home, the world's largest retailer is expanding overseas, concentrating on areas with big growth potential like India and China.

The recent purchase of Indian online marketplace Flipkart announced earlier this month also figures into the company's global expansion plans. Ameriprise Financial Inc. raised its holdings in shares of Walmart by 0.5% during the 3rd quarter.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE:WMT) reported its EPS in the last quarter as $1.33/Share lagging the analyst estimate of $1.37/Share by a difference of $-0.04.

After last quarter's lackluster e-commerce growth, analysts began to wonder if Walmart e-commerce chief Marc Lore was losing his touch, or even if he might leave the company (a notion he has publicly shot down multiple times). Sam's Club total net sales, including fuel, dipped 2.7% for the quarter.

An earnings forecast is an analyst's outlook for a company's future quarterly or annual earnings.
