White House divided on Yanny Laurel debate

White House divided on Yanny Laurel debate

Yanny or laurel? It's a question that has divided the internet ever since the clip of the sound made its way to Twitter.

WIRED writer Louise Matsakis recently spoke to neuroscientist Tyler Perrachione to get to the bottom of the latest internet riddle.

DeGeneres went on to say quite plainly, "The people who hear yanny, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave".

"One of the biggest things is, what kind of hearing loss do you have?"

"Normal hearing, you can hear all those high pitches or even a lot of musicians who are really entuned to those different sounds will hear Yanny", said Stone. Why would people hear two totally different words?

White said she hadn't seen the tweet but would look into it.

But it turns out what you hear pretty much depends on the audio conditions you are under and equipment you use.

Some speculated, like Keating, that the differences might be related to hearing loss or the age of the listener. "It's "laurel, ' but I could deflect and divert to 'yanny" if you need me to", Kellyanne Conway joked. "This debate really amused me, mainly just to see people stop what they are doing to discuss something amusing like this so seriously". On Tuesday evening, Feldman said in a video that she was fielding multiple interview requests and searching for the original creator.

And the device you are listening to might play a role, although Valerie Hazan, professor of speech, hearing and phonetic sciences at UCL, believes that's only partly true.

Fallon was in the minority, saying he could hear it both ways.
