White House says 'nothing has changed' on North Korea summit

Cancellation of the summit, the first meeting between a serving United States president and a North Korean leader, would deal a major blow to what would be the biggest diplomatic achievement of Mr Trump's presidency. If it happens, that's great.

North Korea threatened to walk away from its meeting with President Donald Trump next month if the United States made a "one-sided demand" for the regime to surrender its nuclear weapons.

Trump said Thursday that nothing has changed with respect to North Korea after the warning from Pyongyang.

At the summit between the leaders of North and South Korea on 27 April both sides agreed to work to rid the Korean peninsula of nuclear weapons. This apparently is a reference to the administration's demand that North Korea agree to "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization". North Korea stressed that the drills are a violation of the Panmunjom Declaration signed at the inter-Korean summit.

The groundbreaking agreement for Kim and Trump to meet came about as North Korea said it was committed to denuclearizing the Korean peninsula.

South Korea's unification ministry called it regrettable.

He also specifically criticised John Bolton, the recently appointed national security adviser, who has cited Libya's denuclearisation as a possible prototype for a deal with North Korea.

Earlier, Kim Kye Gwan, North Korea's first vice minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was quoted in an article saying the U.S. said "it would offer economic compensation and benefit in case we abandon (nuclear weapons). We have never had any expectation of USA support in carrying out our economic construction and will not... make such a deal in future".

"Look again, this is the President Trump model".

The rhetoric was not as harsh as North Korea is capable of spewing, but it was a clear indication that North Korea is watching and listening carefully to what officials in the Trump administration are saying.

Trump says his team is now making arrangements for the meeting scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. "The president is very used to and ready for tough negotiations".

It later released a statement saying it might pull out of the summit with the USA if the Trump administration insisted it gave up its nuclear weapons unilaterally.

North Korea issued two articles via state media on Tuesday and Wednesday that threatened the summit, which is scheduled to take place on June 12 in Singapore. Trump, for his part, has even praised Kim for his willingness to talk after decades of icy relations between the US and the North.

"The North Koreans aren't happy with what they're seeing and hearing", he said.

"Everyone thinks so, but I would never say it", Trump said earlier this month when asked if he deserves the prize. Bolton has called for Pyongyang to quickly give up its nuclear ambitions in a similar manner to how Libya abandoned its weapons of mass destruction program.
