Zuckerberg accepts European Union parliament grilling over data scandal

Zuckerberg accepts European Union parliament grilling over data scandal

"If Mark Zuckerberg truly recognises the "seriousness" of these issues, as they say they do, we would expect that he would want to appear in front of the Committee and answer questions that are of concern not only to Parliament, but Facebook's tens of millions of users in this country", he said.

The founder and CEO of Facebook has accepted an invitation to come to Brussels as soon as next week, Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said in a Wednesday press release. And several of the US lawmakers often appeared to fail to grasp the technical details of Facebook's operations and data privacy.

Zuckerberg's trip across the pond to visit Europe comes ahead of the implementation of the EU's data protection regulation.

Yet the question of whether Zuckerberg should explain himself publicly remains a point of contention.

"I will not attend the meeting with Mr Zuckerberg if it's held behind closed doors", Verhofstadt tweeted.

Věra Jourová, the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, said on her Twitter profile that she is glad to see Mark Zuckerberg accept this invitation but that it is pity it will not be a public hearing since many Europeans deserve to know exactly how their data is being handled.

He said the appearance could be as early as next week, and would be "a step in the right direction to restore trust".

Facebook has confirmed that Zuckerberg will attend a meeting with European parliamentary members in Brussels.

This after revelations that political consultancy Cambridge Analytica improperly accessed details of millions of Facebook users.

He added that the tactics were used to "discourage or demobilise certain types of people from voting", and that campaigns and political action committees requested voter suppression from Cambridge Analytica.

However Zuckerburg will be questioned by the chair of the United Kingdom parliament's justice and home affairs committee, Claude Moraes, as he is a British Labour MEP.

Cambridge Analytica whistleblower Christopher Wylie has said that the company engaged in efforts to discourage or suppress voting from targeted sections of the American population, a media report said on Thursday.

Zuckerberg has so far declined to appear, to the British lawmakers' annoyance.
